The Potters announced on Monday Lambert’s appointment as he replaced the sacked Mark Hughes on a two-and-a-half year contract.
Stoke had been first interested in signing Gary Rowett, Quique Sanchez Flores and Martin O’Neill but removed themselves from the running.
During Paul Lambert’s first press conference at the bet365 Stadium yesterday, those names were mentioned to the new Stoke City boss and said: “Whether I was the 15th or 50th choice, it didn’t matter to me one bit because it is a fantastic football club.
“I’ve had the top people trust me that I can do it, and I’m looking forward to it.
“I’m absolutely delighted that they chose me and that I’m working under them.”
“I never thought I would get the chance again to come back into this level, unless you took a team from the Championship back up, just the way the game is going.
“I’m honoured and privileged to be here and I can’t wait to get started.”
