The Southampton Football club or also called “The Saints” is another English football club that competes in the Premier League. The club is based in the city of Southampton, Hampshire. The Saint Mary’s Stadium is the home grounds of Southampton football club since 2001 before they transferred to their current location, The Dell. During the club’s inception in 1885 it was given the nickname “The Saints”, the nickname is based upon the history of the club as a church football club. Prior to its current name, the club was named St. Mary’s Church of England Young Men’s Association. Their home colours are red and white shirts.
The club’s strong rival is the Portsmouth because of its proximity and due to both cities maritime histories. Both club matches are popularly known as the South Coast Derby.
In 1976, the club won the FA Cup and in 1983-84 the team achieved their highest league finish by finishing second in the first division. However, in the 2005 premiere league, Southampton was relegated bringing 27 successive seasons to their football club. After seven years of absence from all leagues, Southampton returned and played ever since then.
