Sunderland

A team belonging to the professional football club formed in the city of North East Sunderland is the Sunderland Association Football Club. Founded on 1879, the club currently plays in the Premier League which is known before as the top league in English football. The club competed in the First Division and won six top flights, for five times the team became runners-up. Sunderland A.F.C also won the FA Cup in 1937 and 1973, the club also ranked as runners-up twice in the FA Cup in the year 1913 and 1992. In 1936, the club also won the FA Community Shield and belonged to the finalists in the following year. The Sunderland A.F.C was also one of the finalists in the 1985 Football League Cup as well as in 2014.

In 1937, Sunderland won their first FA and scored 3-1 defeating Preston North End, for 68 consecutive seasons Sunderland remained in the top league, however, in 1958 the team was relegated for the first time. One of their greatest achievement after the second World War was gaining their notable trophy with a 1-0 score against Leeds United.

The Stadium of Light with 49,000 all-seater capacity is where Sunderland play their home games after moving from Roker Park in 1997. Newcastle United is Sunderland’s long time team rival and they both team have competed in the Tyne-Wear derby since 1898. Sunderland is also one of the most valuable football clubs with a cost at $93 million in 2014, they ranked 31st in the world overall.
