Chelsea do not want their goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to leave in January and move to Real Madrid and they are hoping that they could persuade him to stay.
However, reports in Spain say that Real is close to signing Athletic Bilbao’s Kepa Arizabalaga in January instead of Courtois.
Courtois admitted that he wanted to return to Spain at some stage in his career because of his family and Chelsea’s negotiations were stalled because of the long-term interest from Real.
Courtois also made the decision of leaving or staying difficult as he also showed mixed messages that he is open to staying at Chelsea after his contract expires in 2019,
Real’s top targets are Kepa and Courtois but it is more likely that Real will target Kepa as he is easier to land.
Kepa’s contract at Bilbao will expire after a year compared to Courtois who’s Chelsea contract will end after two years. The 23-year-old Kepa may also be transferred for £22 million.
Chelsea have quoted Real £73 million for Courtois in 2015 and their valuation will not have dropped for the 25-year-old although he has 2 years left with them.
Courtois has also rejected offers from Chelsea, but the club only sees this as a tactic to re-open negotiations at the end of the season.
